Chapter 1: First Simulation

Tutorial Problem

Cantilever Beam Under End Load

Purpose

This tutorial teaches users how to perform the Cantilever Beam Under End Load simulation workflow in ESD. It focuses on practical setup, solver execution, result review, and engineering interpretation.

Objectives

  • Import mesh
  • Define groups
  • Assign material
  • Apply boundary conditions
  • Apply load
  • Run linear static analysis
  • View displacement and stress results
  • Probe displacement at beam tip
  • Export report

Prerequisites

  • Access to the required model or mesh file
  • Basic familiarity with the ESD simulation interface
  • Required material properties and loading information
  • Understanding of the relevant analysis type

Workflow

  1. Import the cantilever beam mesh into ESD.
  2. Review the geometry and mesh quality before setup.
  3. Create or verify named groups for the fixed end, load face, and result probe location.
  4. Assign a linear elastic material to the beam.
  5. Apply a fixed support at the constrained end.
  6. Apply the end load at the free end of the beam.
  7. Select a linear static analysis setup and run the solver.
  8. Visualize displacement and von Mises stress results.
  9. Probe displacement at the beam tip.
  10. Export the simulation report.

Expected Outcome

The user completes a full simulation workflow from mesh import to result export.

Deliverables

  • Complete end-to-end simulation workflow
  • Displacement contour plot
  • Stress contour plot
  • Tip displacement value
  • Exported report

Validation or Engineering Check

Where applicable, compare the numerical result with an analytical solution, expected engineering trend, reaction balance, or benchmark result. Record the comparison in the final report or result table.

Notes and Common Mistakes

  • Confirm that units are consistent throughout the setup.
  • Check that all required groups are assigned correctly.
  • Review boundary conditions before running the solver.
  • Inspect result contours carefully before drawing conclusions.
  • Save exported plots, tables, and reports using clear file names.
